Only Child

You can always have her
If you’re in it for the game
But there will be a part of her
That you can never tame
A part that echoes solitude
And roaming wild and free
And it’s to save this part of her
That she’ll eventually flee

Her strength is taut and fragile
And constitutes the roots
Of all she is and all she lives
And all she does and all she gives
And though she wants to settle down and stay
To find a place where she’s able to belong
She fears the price she has to pay
Is give up to be strong

She wants the world with pain and fear
And happiness and glee
And she’s crying every tear
It takes to let it be
And so she does with warm resolves
And doing it with ease
It’s round her strength her life revolves
And knowing gives her peace

And though she cries with loneliness
At times spaced wide apart
Her soul cries out for sweet caress
She knows this from her heart
If she can never be herself
If she is to belong
Then she chooses solitude
And all else would be wrong

And you can always have her
If you’re in it for the game
But there will be a part of her
That you can never tame
A part that echoes solitude
And roaming wild and free
And it’s to save this part of her
That she’ll eventually flee
