Reclaiming my City

I go to the all clubs and I know that you’re not there
and still my eyes expect to see you everywhere
and everywhere I see a nook where we made out
or a place we had a fight and where we would shout
the places where we used to go and will never go again
and it feels more empty now than it did then

All the places that used to be ours
where we spent long laughing loving hours
are now no one’s land
and seeing them alone is almost more than I can stand

But I’m going to reclaim my city
I’m going to make all of our places my places
I’m going to rediscover all my favourite spaces
just wait and see
I’ll get to know them again and then I am free
you can’t keep me from it forever because it was mine before you came by
soon I can live in my city without wanting to cry

I am in my apartment and I know that you’re not there
and still my eyes expect to see you everywhere
I look at my bed and I don’t understand it without you in it
it’s where we ended every fight and felt that we could both win it
I look at my kitchen and I don’t want to eat there alone
without you in it it doesn’t look like the kitchen I’ve always known

All the places that used to be ours
where we spent long laughing loving hours
are now no one’s land
and seeing them alone is almost more than I can stand

But I’m going to reclaim my city
I’m going to make all of our places my places
I’m going to rediscover all my favourite spaces
just wait and see
I’ll get to know them again and then I am free
you can’t keep me from it forever because it was mine before you came by
soon I can live in my city without wanting to cry

I pass through the streets and I know that you’re not there
and still my eyes expect to see you everywhere
there’s the café where we used to go
how I’ll ever go there again I really don’t know
these streets we used pass and they seem unclear
this is my city and I can’t be here

All the places that used to be ours
where we spent long laughing loving hours
are now no one’s land
and seeing them alone is almost more than I can stand

But just wait and see
I’m reclaiming my city
I’m going to be free
